We had different stuff each day: bagels with cream cheese, muffins, quiche, fresh fruit, cereal, juice, coffee, tea, donuts, eggs, banana bread, a potato casserole, smoothies, oatmeal...

It was really fun to have breakfast before school everyday with a bunch of awesome people! <3

I definitely felt appreciated!

It was Sunday.
It had been a fast week despite the fact that I had been on call at work. Fortunately, the only call I truly received was on Saturday, and the problem he was having could wait until Monday to fix. It was probably around Monday or Tuesday when my buddy texted me to let me know that he and a couple of other friends were going to see the new Star Trek movie on Sunday at the 12:00 (Sunday afternoon, not Saturday midnight, mind you) showing and afterwards we were going to meet up at his house and play a little Star Wars pencil-and-paper D&D-style roleplaying game. So needless to say, I wanted the week to end. And for the most part, it did. I had one day where the day kind of dragged on with stuff to do, but overall it was fairly quick. I did have a few high points. One of them was working on the fuel dispenser for paramedic helicopters on the ninth floor helipad of the local hospit... er, "medical center." (I don't know why, but they're kind of particular about that.) I enjoyed it. Great view. When we met the guy to talk to about the problem, he was in an room labeled "PILOT LEEPER" so I greeted him with a, "Good afternoon, Mr. Leeper," and he gave me a rather puzzling look. I later found out that that particular room was outfitted for the pilot to sleep in (it was the room closest to the helipad) and the plaque outside the door originally said, "PILOT SLEEPER," but the 'S' had fallen (or perhaps been scraped) off. With all that under my belt it had been a rather uneventful remaining week. Typical jobs here, standard jobs there. Nothing to really get excited about. Saturday was a good resting day. I got to sleep in despite the fact that my wife had to get up to take our teenage daughter to Saturday school. Ha ha. She did ask me to pick her up, so I did. After we let her stew outside the school for about a half an hour after her time was served. Ha ha. She was the second-to-last kid to get picked up. The other kid's parents must have been *really* pissed off at him. Ha ha. (Okay, I'll stop that now.) Most of that day was spent doing yardwork. Mowing the grass, weeding the garden, and just basically doing other outdoor cleaning-type stuff. It was a rather peaceful day. Up until about 11 o'clock that night when I got the call for gas station having problems with their printer. If you haven't figured it out by now, I work for a company that services fueling equipment. The guy has three registers in his station and the one that gets used the most is the one that went bad (Shocker!). So I told him to just swap the printer with one of the lesser-used registers and we'd send someone on Monday to fix it for him. It ended up being me, but that's a moot point, because that was Monday, and I'm talking about Sunday. Now this is when my week truly started to get a little taxing. Due to the fact that I had just been "woken up" by an emergency call and reminding myself that I will soon be seeing Into Darkness and living vicariously through a droid, I found it difficult to fall asleep. So I do what I normally do and just dink around on the internet. Standard stuff: check the Paradox forums, visit Cracked.com, jayisgames.com and usually Googling stuff like, "LEGO Mindstorms 3D printer" and watching videos of 12 foot trucks trying to drive under 11 foot underpasses. I eventually got to the point that I could barely keep my eyes open and went to bed.
It was Sunday.
It started out fairly normal. Got up, woke the kids up, got ready for the day, watching the clock, waiting for 11 o'clock to roll around to go hang out with the guys. My wife needed some stuff for dinner and took a trip to the local Dollar General to get a few things. When she got back she realized that she had left a bad at the store. Because she was now getting herself and the kids ready to go to church, she didn't have the time to go back and get it, so she asked me to. I suggested that she look at the receipt, find the number and call the store to let them know it would be me and not her getting the bag. She obliged. She gave me the receipt, I gave her and the kids kisses and hugs, told them I'd see them for supper, and was out the door. I really can't say anything interesting happened on the way to the store, because nothing did. It was on the way *back* that was interesting and that is what the purpose of this post is for. You see, I'm a rather... well, let's say... "loving" person? I tell the kids NOT to kill any bugs/insects if they are outside; they're just trying to live. I'd ask them, "How would you feel if someone just walked up to you and squished you?" Inside the house? That's fine. Although I tend to capture 'em and release them outside. (I don't think we should kill anything just because we can. But that's not my point.) The culmination of this thinking occurred when the family and I were traveling back from Chicago on the toll road. We had just paid the attendant (I don't make the trip enough to justify the cost of purchasing an iPass) and I was accelerating away from the booth when my wife alerted me to "WATCH OUT!" Being too close to the car ahead of me, which managed to straddle it, I noticed a medium-sized turtle attempting to make its way across the tollroad in what could only be assumed as an attempt imitate a chicken and get to the other side. *THUMP* *THUMP*. I looked in my rear-view mirror to see what could only have been the turtle bouncing and tumbling along the road behind me. He had only made it 1/3 of the way through his journey and no doubt he probably thought he had it in the bag. And then I came along. I felt like shit. I cried. Honestly, I did. It was a horrible experience. This poor turtle was just trying to live and didn't know any better. He didn't know the dangers of crossing a freeway. He lived a life of defeating predators. He probably thought all those fast moving objects would be no match for him. I thought about all the cars that had careened around him. How proud those drivers were for avoiding him and letting him continue on his journey. I thought about the conversation officer that had probably been called about the turtle, who may have been not too far behind me, on his way to save the naive turtle from any danger. I thought about all this and cried. Truly, honestly cried. The rest of that trip was rather subdued. I still think about that turtle. Every. Single. Day.
But now it's Sunday.
I'm driving back from Dollar General with the bag that my wife had forgotten. The cashier attempted to accept the blame by telling me that she should have made sure my wife had everything before she left, but I told her it was okay. We didn't live too far away. Not a big deal. So here I am driving down the road. Up ahead on the right I see a group of three teenagers walking along the sidewalk. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a regular Sunday. But guess what runs out in front of me? A turtle? No, that would be too cruel. It was a squirrel. I was just passing the teenagers and the squirrel was up ahead a bit. *THUMP* *THUMP* My first reaction? No, it wasn't the squirrel. It wasn't the turtle. It was the teenagers. I looked at them in my rear-view mirror. They were holding their hands to their faces but I didn't know if they were in shock or laughing, but I only know I couldn't stop. My truck or *my* laughter. Yes. I was laughing. And I don't know why. Maybe it was because the turtle didn't know what he was doing and was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the squirrel was just a stupid tree rat and played chicken with cars all the time, but I just could not stop laughing. I wanted to stop. I wanted to ask the teens if they were okay; if my actions had shocked or scarred them. If there was anything I could do. Bury the squirrel or at least move it off the road. I kept watching the teens, wondering how they were reacting to what just transpired in front of them, and kept laughing. I still feel bad about the turtle. It still makes me a little sad. But the squirrel didn't. Are squirrels not as good as turtles? Do turtles have a rough life and deserve a pass at misfortune whereas squirrels are running around rampant everywhere and need to be subjected to a little Darwin-esque population control? I don't know. But I do know that I made it to the movie on time. And then I played some Star Wars D&D. And then I had a nice steak for dinner.
It was Sunday.

I guess it has more to do with the fact turtles can't react as quickly as squirrels do... but anyway, everything is going decently here today, nice chilly rain outside, great day in all. My thoughts are on the tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma Sunday and Monday and the children that were killed when the tornado hit their school... I cried... I honestly did, I hate to see anyone lose their life that way, but children are the worst. I am on the air again, finally, but next week will be touch and go, definitely no me on Thursday the 30th, having surgery that day. Monday might be a bit busy for me, so at the moment I am not sure if I will be on or not, but.. I am today, so if you are on when I am, pop into chat and say hello :)

Radiological!
The cretin was up in the wee hours and thought... is tonight Soda's DJ session? I tuned in to catch the last 10 minutes. The boys hardly had time to put on their Kiss-The-DJ T-shirts. Now they're sittin out onna porch, nursin some puddins and slammin mah cretinous timing. They'll be fine and giggly as normal, as soon as the next passing June bug or psychotic dumpster distracts them.
So, all the best with your appointments, DJ SodaFett and here's to better timing!
