Coming To America ...

Unread post by ElljaeT » Mon Feb 23, 2009 12:49 pm

Travel Blog: http://ellandgobb.blogspot.com

Now that a few people have heard some things on a variety of grapevines and the whispers are getting louder, it is probably time to make a formal announcement that Gob and I are planning a trip around the US of A for 3 and a half weeks in September - October.

We have also mentioned trying to hold the inaugural Paracon in Kansas City on 3rd, October, 2009. Because we are not residents, and have to travel quite a long way to make this happen the inaugural Paracon is most likely to be a meet up in a restaurant or a BBQ in someones back yard but will definitely be a case of the more the merrier. That said you guys now have a little over 7 months to figure out how you're going to make it to Kansas City :-)

I am releasing a tentative itinerary so you guys get the full idea of where we plan to go and when. Please note however that it is very much subject to change at this stage and I will let you know when we have solidified our bookings.

We are very excited about making this trip and certainly hope that we can organise a big meetup while we are over there.
  • New York City, NY 19-22 September
  • Washington, DC 22-23 September
  • New Orleans, LA 23-26 September
  • Chicago, IL 27-29 September
  • Kansas City, MO 29 September - 5 October
  • Las Vegas, NV 5-8 October
  • San Francisco, CA 8-10 October
  • Los Angelas, CA 10-13 October
EDIT: Itinerary updated :)

We are planning to Amtrak all over the place with a few exceptions.

Ex LA to go back to Australia.

ok so a couple questions. Kansas City, MO or Kansas City, KS? Also, you'll be in NY. any chance you'll trek outside the city for just a bit? I live a couple hours out of the boroughs and would love to see you guys :D

This sounds sweet. I'm definitely going to have to think about coming somewhere but can't promise...this sounds really cool though. Most of those cities are ones I've never really spent any time in myself, I hope you guys have a blast.

Count me (technically in) for either Chicago or Kansas City again. If you're willing to cross the big wet, I HAVE to be there.

Kansas City, MO

As for trekking, as much as we'd both LOVE to be able to get around and see everyone, honestly I don't know what we will and won't be able to manage. As Elljae mentioned, we're going to be Amtraking or flying between major cities, and have no plans to hire a car, so our transport options will be somewhat limited. Maybe if people local to those cities want to organise some kind of mini-meetup, we can certainly do our best.

Ok folks.. there WILL be an official meetup in Kansas City over the weekend of October 2-4, 2009. There's no way we can host Gobb and ell here and NOT have an official meetup.
We'll work out the details. Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements and information.

If I go i could sleep on the floor on a blanket somewhere even, not particular as long as it is indoors and not like in a tent. :D I'm not sure if I'm making it though so it may not be an issue.

Well, we changed a couple of things from our original plan but it's much the same. Here's our preliminary itinerary (damn both those words are hard to type):
  • New York City, NY 19-22 September
  • Washington, DC 22-23 September
  • New Orleans, LA 23-26 September
  • Chicago, IL 26-29 September
  • Kansas City, MO 29 September - 5 October
  • Las Vegas, NV 5-8 October
  • San Francisco, CA 8-10 October
  • Los Angelas, CA 10-13 October
We're currently in the process of arranging all of our airfares, accommodation and other travel stuffs, which is a not-insignificant (and not-inexpensive) task.

If anyone has any suggestions for places to stay, things to do, or ways to get from one place to another, feel free to let us know :)

Did y'all ever get an "official" ruling on tentage?

There will be space for 'tentage'. (Thank you, Travoltus!)

We are currently doing some initial planning to come up with cost estimates (figure somewhere around $20 per person for food an drink during Con times), lodging options, etc. Once we have a general plan, we will be posting an official announcement. From there, we will have a pre-registration form to fill out if you know you are coming. Pre-enrollment will not be required, but will offer a discounted value as well as perks to be used at the Con.

I'm not sleeping on a couch that does not involve a Spiff, a Wolf and a Brown Chicken/Brown Cow double whammy.

Well today, Gob and I went to the travel agent and laid out the money (well credit card) that paid for our flights, insurance and partial deposit on accommodation. So it is all locked in and we are most definitely coming. The dates that Gob mentioned above are now locked in and that is where we will be and when.

Totally psyched about seeing y'all :-)

And yay for 'locked in' stuffz! Now just...uh...11 months? No, that's not right. 3 weeks? Damn it. Anyway, now we're just playing the waiting game. Any RFX DJ's down for playing the Jeopardy music?

5 months and 3 weeks as of yesterday :-) Well that's until we leave Australia. The meet up is 6 months and 5 days away :-) or something like that.

"An illustrated guide to contradictions, curiosities, and mind-boggling twists of reason, [The Paradoxicon] features a diverse collection of visual, logical, mathematical, and scientific puzzles. Classic and recently discovered paradoxes are explored in this detailed treasury of logic-defying enigmas." Sounds like a fitting description for a gathering of this particular group of people...=o)
