Typos - MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

Even though I'm infullible (ie. the nearest thing to infallible), I do occasionally make mistakes. OK, pretty regularly.

Anyway the point is, if you find any typos in any of the content, please post them here so they can be fixed.

Please note that spoiler tags may be required for some information. Think carefully about whether or not what you're reporting falls under "common knowledge" or "potential spoiler" and use appropriate tags.

What's a typo?

Typo = typographical error. Basically, any errors in spelling or grammar.

ex-bearded lady:

Everything else is looking good so far :D

Oh that's funny.

For anyone else considering reporting this kind of stuff, please be aware that I'm an Aussie and I spell things the Australian/British way. I will not be Americanising (read AmericaniZing if you like) my spelling under any circumstances. So there :P

At the Paradox University Department of Noobology, the section where you learn about turns, the professor tells you that if you see a name with a hyphen after it, that it is showing how many turns that area uses. Shouldn't hyphen be replaced with parentheses there?

Heh, for someone who's so obsessive about the use of apostrophes, you'd think I'd get that right. Fact is, there are probably several like it scattered around. Let me know if you find any more :)

Oh and that one's fixed.

EDIT: I knew something about that was bugging me, particularly with regard to this: So what's "white noise?"

Logically that made no sense, because the quote "white noise" isn't a question. According to rule 2 on the link you posted, it should be: So what's "white noise"?

</logic nazi>

You're still right about the "Thriller." thing though :)

VON NOOB ERRORS IN THEIR ENTIRETY. (without crying too much about overuse of commas)

Department of Noobology (initial encounter)

"To your left you will see the 'Character Pane' (or 'Charpane')." --> remove () because Navpane is written without () in the sentence before it Fixed
what appear to be random words and numbers, with some pretty --> no , Fixed.

As a note, if you plan to put all clarifiers in (), do so. There are more () in the fourth explanation. Also, keep your ' and " consistent. The marks used in the third explanation use ' and the fourth explanation uses ". Fix this. Fixed where found.

(final explanation)

Not a typo, but not sure where to put this.

That was written when the food items gave the same amount of turns and stats each time.

Still a typo for sure. I've got a couple of things to work on right now, but this is exactly why the reset function exists. Or at least, it's one of the reasons. One of many. Whatever. The point is that I really appreciate you taking the time to go through these things and point out the things that, for various reasons, have been neglected or are just plain wrong, and will get onto them very shortly.

Except where I decide that a typo is either just the way I talk (or von noob talks) and leave it alone so it's consistent with anything else I might throw out there in future.

Charlie Gardens Memorial Park - Combat Round 1
(fighting the flame tree)

You think about shouting goodbye and catching the last train out of there but before you can, it sees you standing on the outside looking in.

Goodbye needs quotation marks. Also, it is a run-on sentence.

Here is a suggestion for fixing.
You think about shouting, "goodbye" and catching the last train out of there. But before you can it sees you standing on the outside looking in.

Changed to 'You think about shouting "goodbye" and catching the last train out of there, but before you can, it sees you standing on the outside looking in.'

We just discussed run-on sentences and agreed that they were perfectly normal in this game, and not something that needs correcting, so I'll not worry about that.

I agree that the example (which I'm not being defensive about, since I didn't write it) is not perhaps as good as it could be, however if I have to start worrying about silly little things like run-on sentences (which I personally really like, because I feel they add a certain something to the text), nothing will ever get done. To me, it replaces natural speech with technical correctness. Changing to the example would just make it appear stilted to me, and it would still be incorrect, as the suggested fix starts a new sentence with a conjunction.

Seriously, though, there are typos and then there's just us being picky, and I strongly feel that quite a lot above falls under the "picky" category, rather than the useful correction category.

Something else I notice is that some of these reported typos are matters of personal preference, American English vs British English vs Australian English and/or local dialect, too. For example:

"so I think we're pretty well done." --> pretty much done OR pretty much finished

you'll be given a number of tasks which, when complete, --> when completed

"It's not a bad sort of a place, --> No "a"

Both the originals, and the suggested alternatives, seem fine to me. My personal preference in all cases, however, is the original.

Oh well, I'm not going to bang on about it for hours, but in order that we not have to debate the finer points of grammar until the bovines return to the domicile, let's just try and stick to the important and blatantly wrong ones. All I can say is, please, please, please don't sit and pick through every nuance, trying to make everything (including quotes) as technically perfect as possible. It just won't sound right, and is suprisingly tedious.

And if you see anything that's as blatantly wrong as this:

"Your oppononent puhnches you in the noz for 8 dmmamage.!!1!"

Please report it. In case you didn't spot it, btw, the error was clearly that the sentence needed "ZOMG" at the beginning. And more exclamations!!!!!!!!!!

Pedants, start your engines!

No. The "from" is optional and, I believe, much more common in American English than in British (and therefore Australian) English.

The phrases "stop something happening" and "stop something from happening" are identical in meaning, which makes the "from" redundant.

Another interesting one that will probably come up at some point is the American use of "different than" as compared to the British use of "different to/from". For example, the American phrase "Bill is different than Mary" is functionally equivalent to the British phrase "Bill is different to Mary".

No, I don't know why, but I'll give you one guess as to which one I'll use.

Gobberwart wrote:Another interesting one that will probably come up at some point is the American use of "different than"
Don't ask me why, but I've been thinking about this recently, and you know, saying something is 'different than' something else is complete nonsense.

When you use the word "than", it's usually in conjunction with "more" or "less", eg. "Fred is more stupid than Joe" or "Nancy is less pretty than a bucket of squashed frogs", or a comparative (-er word) such as "stupider" or "uglier" ("Nancy is uglier than a hatful of busted arseholes").

I suppose if you were comparing just HOW different two things were it might be ok (eg. "Nancy is more different than Fred") but that's about it.

"Nancy is different than Fred" is nonsense. Think about it.

You must really hate someone named Nancy.

*EDIT* avoiding the threadjack weapon:

Charlie Gardens, the jogger's miss message "He shouts at you angrily, and starts waving his arms about, but isn't used to all that upper-body activity and has to pause for minute to recover." <--should be "pause for a minute"

A Pair O Ducks: "No bird brain ... " the first duck interrupts <--should be "No, bird brain..." the first duck interrupts,

not a typo, but when you see Sammy, the line "Surely they're not that much of a nuisance." is just BEGGING for an "Airplane!" reference.

I'll have a go.

In the Cafeteria - Veni, Vidi, Vendi
"Cool, Refreshing Drinks!" it says on the machine.. Right next to the sign saying "Out Of Order".

The ellipsis needs a third period. Also, the last period needs to go inside the quotes. Always.

http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/quotes.asp - as TheDude already pointed us to.

In the Really bad joke -
"Have you heard about the new corderoy pillows?"
Corderoy is a misspelling. Corduroy is the fabric, it's a U, not an E. Corderoy is something else, a lot of people have this surname. I entered the joke into the Wiki, followed by (sic), as it's misspelled. I'll change that if you tell me this is fixed. Thanks ! :)

Unless I'm missing some Aussie sarcasm here, I believe he's referring to the classic comedy movie "Airplane". (ie., "Yes they are a nuisance. And don't call me Shirley")

Ah, see in Australia, that movie is called "Flying High". Actually it was meant to be called "Flying High" in the states too but apparently the distributors caved to pressure over potential drug references. Go figure.

Not a typo, exactly, but when you use a Carpet bag, it says:
Wow, so that's what scientists consider "a lot of moolah"? Poor fools!
But it doesn't agree with the event where you acquire the Carpet bag, since it says "we're paying you good moolah..."
Maybe it's picky, but 'good money' and 'a lot of money' don't mean the same. At least that's my understanding. 'Good money after bad,' etc. :)
