'til vs. till

Unread post by jupider » Wed Dec 22, 2010 3:28 pm

For as long as I've been writing, if I ever had to abbreviate the word "until," I would do it as "'til" instead of the seemingly more popular method of "till." The reason for this is because the "un" is removed and replaced with an apostrophe. This is the same logical truncation that is made with nearly every other abbreviated word that gains an apostrophe in the process. When I see the word "till" I think of the tray that holds the money in a cash register and it bugs the shit out of me when it's used for "until." So, go ahead and pick the version you prefer so I can see if I'm alone in this or if there's anyone else out there that shares my opinion.

p.s. I really hate having OCD.

I completely agree with jupider, except for the OCD part

I've heard it both ways applies greatly here. Till of course the lightsaber turns teal.

Here's an interesting article on the subject, regardless of anyone's opinion, which seems to suggest that the word "till" is a very old, completely separate word meaning "to", and not actually an abbreviation for "until" at all.

Link: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-unt1.htm

That said, I'd have said 'til if forced to make a choice, but I've seen and used both 'til and till, depending on the circumstances. Is there a specific instance in-game you're referring to, jupider, or is this just a generic OCD episode?

A very interesting link, Gobb. Thank you. So it appears that till is just in fact a very, very, very old version of until, and 'til is a more recent abbreviation of it. So despite the fact that I think it looks incorrect, it technically still is. Still, it would be nice if it would stop being used. Kind of like wholly. I hate that word, too.

But to answer your question, no, I don't think it occurs in-game anywhere, it is just an entirely OCD thing.

I just got asked exactly this question at work today, and was able to come back to this forum topic, grab the link and reuse it. Where's that Like button again?

Yet again one of my OCD quirks saves the day.

Everything happens for a reason Gobb.
