BIRTHDAY REMINDERS

Unread post by cherita » Tue Feb 02, 2010 4:38 am

I suggest we have something in Paradox which reminds us of our friends birthdays so we can say Happy Birthday to them on that special day....

real birthdays! I was thinking the easiest way would be a leaderboard with the next birthdays being listed first :D

That would get out of hand if the playerbase exceeded 36,500 (I think it will exceed much more). More than 100 people would have a birthday every day.

Yeah, I can't see how we could have any kind of leaderboards, but it might be a nice idea to let people choose to record and/or show their birthday, and allow people to receive notifications for any of their contacts' birthdays. I'll put it on the list.

on the birthday alerts, SSW has notifications sent in game to your mail, when one of your whitelisted friends has a birthday coming up, it is not always spot on, but it is a thought.

it wouldn't need to MAIL us about it, it could simply be a log-in alert.

It would be cool if you got a birthday cake on your birthday. Sure, some people would set their birthday to the next day to get it right away, but then they would have to wait a whole year to get another! It could be largely useless. Example:

Large Chocolate Cake
This is a big cake. Big enough for a stripper to fit into! Well, maybe an anorexic one. Anyways, dig in! It's not like you're going to die from it...
References include cake strippers, anorexia, and death by chocolate desserts.
fullness: 15
turns: 1
Consume message: You eat the cake and it tastes... weird... but good. Then you notice. Holy shit, there WAS an anorexic stripper in it! Shortly after eating the cake you throw almost all of it up. Well, I guess anorexia runs in the blood. Or maybe it was because you just ate a whole person... Anyways, Happy birthday, PLAYERNAME!

Something like that would be awesome!

Also there could be an award for eating 3 Large Chocolate Cakes

1. Bulimia is the eating disorder where you throw up all your food. Anorexia is not eating at all, so the whole 'throw almost all of it up' bit doesn't fit for anorexia. Now, if you wanted to change it to say something along the lines of 'You stare at the cake longingly for a few moments, then finally munch on a sprinkle before throwing the rest of it in the trash,' that'd be more fitting.
2. Having a system set up in the game that allows players to receive some sort of message(whether PMail or a message in chat) is fine by me...but I think it would be better to let the players themselves give birthday gifts to their friends if they so choose. Any sort of 'birthday' gifts given by the game itself should, I think, be based on the player's game anniversary.

I meant birthday as in real life birthday. DrWold, 1. 'You stare at the cake longingly for a few moments, then finally munch on a sprinkle before throwing the rest of it in the trash' would work.

I usually just say in chat "its my birthday........ gimmie!"

Has worked for many years in many games, many times........ :D

Some times the simple things work the best

I've been thinking about this one on and off for a while, but at this stage I can't see it happening in a hurry, if at all, for a few reasons.

Realistically, there's no way of allowing people to enter their birthdate into the game and verify that it's accurate or prevent them changing it, so the concept of automatically delivering a birthday gift just can't happen because some idiot would find a way to abuse it. Before anyone suggests it, yes I could allow people to enter it once and then prevent them ever changing it, but what if they make a mistake? Oh, they could pmail me to fix it, but I think I'd get pretty tired of that very quickly. Better to just not do it at all in my opinion.

As far as birthday notifications go... isn't that what Facebook (and similar social networking sites) is for? Sure, birthday reminders are kinda cute and appealing to some, but I really don't think that's what Paradox should be about. I mean, where do we draw the line? Birthday reminders, personal "walls", integrated photo albums etc. etc. Do the majority *really* want that sort of thing in here, or is it just a lot of work for me with very little actual benefit to the game? I suspect the latter.
