Wiki Reference Contest!

Unread post by Spiff » Sat May 17, 2014 4:56 am

Greetings Paracites!! There is a new contest involving the spading of references on the wiki! The contest will last two weeks. Gobb is going to confirm all references so make sure they are correct. Each item/opponent/location has more than one reference so the more you find the better chance you have of winning. The contest is for the paracite who finds the most correct references. All references should be posted in this thread and not onto the wiki so we can confirm them with gobb, So if you have found alot make one big post in this thread. A special item will be given to the 1st place winner and for all participants wiki wacky taffy will be given out. So with that happy spading and best of luck!
The Spiff

Red hot tip: Don't trust the "References needed" page. That page is put together based on whether someone in Wiki-land realises that a given page lacks references. It does not mean that all possible references for game content have been identified.

Source: Me.

EDIT: Case in point - Dixon Balls (TM) hot jam doughnut - Seriously, there is nothing anyone can think of that this item may be referencing? Nothing at all?

It's dripping with innuendo:

"Dixon Balls (TM) hot jam doughnut" - Dicks on Balls, Jammed Down it?
"Hot sticky jam encased in doughnut and dusted with sugar" - hot sticky jam and dusted with sugar could be euphemisms for cum
"scalding hot jam spurts out, over your chin and down your arm" - ejaculation
"Better put something on that!" - maybe a condom then this wouldn't happen

But none of those really seem like references, just jokes. If we can count those as references I can get so many more items... :)

edit: this item is so full of sex already, why not make the autosell 69?

Wow, that was really graphic dude! And not quite what I meant either*, although you do raise a very interesting point.

What, exactly, is a "reference"? Has it been defined anywhere in the wiki for the sake of clarity?

I mean, is it enough to say "The don't rag refers to a do rag"? I wouldn't have thought so. To me, that's just stating the obvious, but maybe others feel differently about it.

As for pointing out jokes.. well, it's not really a "reference" per se, but I'd suggest that some jokes are more worth noting than others. In the "References" section of a wiki page? Maybe not, but perhaps in "Notes" section instead. Ditto puns, onomatopoeia, common expressions etc. Are they references or just notes?

In my opinion, a reference should generally be something that refers to a specific thing, be it a movie, song, game, book, event, person, website or other thing where the source can be definitely identified. For example, in the "master miner" combat, the line, "Say hello to my little friend" has been correctly identified as being a quote from Al Pacino's character Tony Montana in the movie Scarface, although of course it's been twisted when you're attacked by a minor miner, but that's not the point. It's a good example of a specific reference.

Note also that I said "definitely" identified. Example: You've said that "Mr. Sun" refers to a specific song, however I'm not sure why you say that. It *could* refer to that song, but apart from the words "Mr. Sun", what else in the text suggests that we are referring specifically to that song, and not to something completely different, or in fact nothing at all other than the fact that sometimes people call the sun "mean old Mr. Sun" or "nasty old Mr. Sun"? Hint: I've never heard of that song before :)

Anyway, just food for thought.

*Reference hint for the Dixon Balls that isn't quite as feral: The fairly silly warning message may refer to...?

Warning: Hot jam may, surprisingly, be hot! and the consumption message could be referring to silly warnings on things? Like electrical generators that say WARNING: Risk of electric shock?

I am extending this contest till JUNE 30th. This should give people ample time to find and correctly identify references. Please check the Established Standards page on the wiki : http://www.paradoxwiki.com/index.php?ti ... References
for how to correctly go about putting references on the wiki!! Happy hunting everyone!

Dixon Balls (TM) hot jam doughnut
“Warning: Hot jam may, surprisingly, be hot!”
McDonald’s restaurants serve their apple turnovers with the fruit filling so hot, that it is initially inedible. The packaging for the product warns that the hot food may be hot.

“You bite into the doughnut, and scalding hot jam spurts out, over your chin and down your arm. Seriously, you were warned! Better put something on that!”
In the USA, a lawsuit was lodged against McDonalds, by a woman who suffered an injury to her legs, when she spilled their scalding hot coffee on herself.
------------
Better than you medal
“Oh, you can't stop this train from rolling!...”
“Can’t stop this train from rolling” is from a song by Metallica called “Better Than You.”

:)

Here are a few that I noticed...
Master Miner: The description contains a reference to the graphic novel The Hard Goodbye.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hard_Goodbye

Boston Rum Punch: The dangly bit and the no tea refer to the computer game The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The "tea party" refers to the Boston Tea Party.

Short Island Iced Tea: Obviously refers to the Long Island Iced Tea, a cocktail that is made without any tea and is named after Long Island. "No tea" again refers to the Hitchhiker's Guide video game. "Martin" refers to comedian Martin Short.

Kilted Cappuccino contains references to the so-called True Scotsman.

Oh, and the hair in the Short Island iced tea refers to short hairs.

Here are some more jokes referenced in 'Barroom Blitz':
A guy walks into a bar and the bartender says 'Hey, do you know you've got a carrot in your ear?'
The guy says 'What?'
bartender: 'I said, do you know you've got a carrot in your ear?'
guy: 'WHAT?'
bartender: 'I SAID, DO YOU KNOW YOU'VE GOT A CARROT IN YOUR EAR?'
guy: 'I can't hear you, I've got a carrot in my ear.'

A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says 'Why the long face?'

Two peanuts walk into a bar. One was assaulted.

A gorilla walks into a bar. The bartender thinks 'Huh, a gorilla?'
The gorilla takes a seat and says 'Hello bartender. I'd like a margarita please.'
Surprised, the bartender thinks 'This gorilla seems pretty smart.' He mixes up a margarita, serves it to the gorilla and says 'That'll be 18 dollars'
The gorilla says 'ok' and hands the bartender a $20 bill.
The bartender thinks 'I wonder how smart this gorilla is. I'll give him incorrect change and see what he does.'
The bartender gives the gorilla $1 in change, and the gorilla says 'Excuse me, but I gave you $20, so I should get $2 in change.'
The bartender apologizes and gives the gorilla the other dollar.
The bartender thinks 'This gorilla really is pretty smart' and says "You know, we don't get many gorillas around here.'
And the gorilla says 'Yeah, well, at $18 for a margarita, I'm not surprised.'

A grasshopper walks into a bar and the bartender says 'Hey, we've got a drink named after you!'
And the grasshopper says 'Really? You've got a drink named Steve?'

A Dutch fellow walks into a bar and orders a beer. A few minutes later, the bartender says 'Hey, aren't you Vincent van Gogh?'
The Dutchman says 'Yes, I am.'
The bartender says 'I'm a big fan! Would you like a drink on the house?'
And Vincent van Gogh says 'No thanks, I've got one 'ere.'

A pirate walks into a bar. The bartender says 'Hey buddy, you've got a steering wheel down your pants!'
The pirate says 'Arr, I know. It's driving me nuts!'

A polar bear walks into a bar and says 'I'd like a gin and........tonic, please.'
The bartender says 'Sure, but why the big pause?'
'Um, I'm a polar bear.'

A guy walks into a bar and sees a dog in the corner licking his own testicles. The guy says 'Boy, I wish i could do that.'
The bartender says 'Go ahead, he seems friendly enough.'

A guy who's new in town goes into a bar and orders a beer. As he's drinking, he hears people saying 'Big John is coming to town! Big John is coming to town!'
A few minutes later, someone pokes his head in through the door and says 'Big John is coming!' and runs away. Everybody else in the bar hides under the tables and behind the bar and in the bathroom, except for the stranger, still sitting and drinking his beer.
Then a huge bloke walks into the bar, points at the stranger and says...
:( oops, I'm sorry, I'm not sure I want to finish this joke in the forums. I can send you the rest in an in-game message if you ask me for it.

A pirate walks into a bar. He has a pegleg, a hook hand, and an eyepatch.
After he orders his drink, the bartender asks "So, how did you get the pegleg?'
Pirate: 'We were in a storm, and I was swept out to sea. As me mates were pulling me back aboard, a shark bit me leg off.'
Bartender" 'Wow. And how did you lose your hand?'
Pirate: 'Arr, we were attacked by an enemy ship and one of the scurvy scallywags cut me hand off with his cutlass.'
Bartender: 'And how about the eyepatch?'
Pirate: 'I was in the crow's nest as a lookout and a seagull pooped in me eye.'
Bartender: 'What? How did you lose an eye to seagull poop?'
Pirate: ''Well, twas me first day with the new hook.'

And just for the hell of it:
A neutron walks into a bar and asks 'How much for a beer?' The bartender says 'For you, no charge!' :D

This is what I'm talking about! Looks like we have a few folks that are truly digging into how the developer's minds work when implementing references.

I can't help but point out that, while the hair in the "Short Island Ice Tea" does have a slight reference to the name of the drink, it goes much deeper. Not to mention that, so far, no one has picked up on the running gag.

So far, though, very good. Many references have been identified here that I have been amazed are not already on the wiki. Looks like that will be changing!

Keep up the excellent work, you sleuths.
And as for you villains not participating.... "Knock off all that evil"!

This is awesome, guys, keep em coming!

If you have wiki edit access, go right ahead and add them to the Wiki as well, or ask a Wiki editor to add them on your behalf.

Spiff is currently taking a short break from the Internet for personal/family reasons, but will be back soon and I'm sure will be pleased to see some quality contributions.

Do you mean this? "Refers to the common idiom, "hair of the dog that bit you". This is usually used to describe the act of drinking alcohol to lessen a hangover."
It's present in all the gin drinks and the "hairless gin" item. I guess I just forgot to add it to the Short Island Iced Tea.

I shouldn't get credit for it because I didn't discover the reference, I just added it to the new gin items. It was already on the hairless gin item.

No. And while the hair of the dog is a good stab, it is not the running reference. That reference on the hairless gin item is incorrect. It's a movie reference. One of the developer's favorite movies. And that's the last hint you will get from me. 8)

Alright, here's my guess. I don't think I'm right...

A quick google search for "Gobberwart" leads to just PTM stuff, mainly. But Gobberwarts is apparently slang for gonads and I found this quote:
Vogon poetry is described as "the third worst poetry in the Universe". The main example used in the story is a short piece composed by Jeltz, which roughly emulates nonsense verse in style (example below). The story relates that listening to it is an experience similar to torture as demonstrated when Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect are forced to listen to the poetry (and say how much they liked it) prior to being thrown out of an airlock.

"Oh freddled gruntbuggly,
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes,
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts
With my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!"
Which seems to be the origin of the "word" and what I surmise to be the origin of Gobb's name. Which makes me think that Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is his favorite movie. It also seems like his humor based on movies like Beetlejuice references and the like.

So here goes references:

"Beeblebrox advised that you should "never drink more than two Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters unless you are a thirty ton mega elephant with bronchial pneumonia."

The first item with gin, the hairless gin, is dropped from the Ebriositatic Elephant. Beeblebrox also liked to drink gin, and gin is in the Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Beeblebrox has wild hair.

That's all I got. :P

I think "Long John Silver" more likely refers to the character in Treasure Island, than the seafood restaurant.

I can't believe I missed this and you're sort of on the right track.

Yes, Vogon poetry is the origin of my name. Whether "gobberwarts" is actually slang for "gonads" or not, I like to think it is.
No, Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy is not my favourite movie. Talk to me about the original books and radio/television shows and, well, that's a different story.

Now, gin...

If the gin contained a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick then maybe you'd be on to something, but it doesn't and so you're not. Keep searching for the reference though. It's in there.

Hairless Gin is a reference to the movie Rustlers' Rhapsody, where Rex O'Herlihan says, "Give me a tall glass of warm gin with a human hair in it."

The durian is a fruit that reportedly smells like shit but tastes good (to some). The "people that consider this a delicacy that are full of stuff not unlike this" references the fact that it they're "full of shit"

The KuteCat is a reference to the Kit Kat. The company has a lot of ads.

The Betterfinger is a reference to the Butterfinger. The line, 'Remember, just say, "BetterFinger me!"' is a sexual joke.

Spittles are referencing Skittles.

Also, hasn't it been two weeks?
