Aussie Pride!
CONTEST OVER - WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
I've picked up on the fact that a number of you non-Aussie types are coveting the awesomeness that is the Aussie Pride sticker, and have been asking how to get one.
The standard answer is either "Emigrate to Australia" or "Come and visit me here and bring plenty of beer", but since that's obviously unrealistic, I thought I'd run up a little contest to see just how much you want one.
Here's the deal:
This contest will run for 2 weeks, finishing at Intermission on February 22, 2009.
1st Prize: 1,000,000 Moolah
2nd Prize: 500,000 Moolah
3rd Prize: 200,000 Moolah
All participants who submit entries that I judge as being worthy will receive an Aussie Pride sticker.
What do you have to do? Well, there are three parts to this. You don't HAVE to do them all, but extra points will be given if you do. You MUST, however, complete Part 3 and EITHER Part 1 or Part 2.
Part 1 - Dress-Up Photo Contest
Dress yourself in your best possible "Aussie" costume and post a photo of it here.
Points will be given for creativity and "Aussieness". Points will be deducted for gratuitous anti-Aussie themes (Kangaroo-shagging, for example, is right out. This is NOT New Zealand or Wales).
Part 2 - Song Contest
This is simple. Record yourself singing the Australian National Anthem OR another quality "Aussie" song ("Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" or "Working Class Man" for example) and email it to me at gobberwart@gmail.com in MP3 Format. If you need tools to use for this, check out the free software "Audacity" - http://audacity.sourceforge.net.
Points will be given for effort and "Aussieness". You don't need to have an instrumental backing track, but if you can find (or make) one, great.
Part 3 - Australian Trivia Quiz
Along with your song recording, answer the following ten questions in your email:
1. Who is the current Prime Minister of Australia?
2. What is the national floral emblem of Australia?
3. Name three Australian native animals.
4. Name the long, wooden musical instrument traditionally played by Australian Aborigines.
5. What is unusual about the "Henley on Todd Regatta"?
6. What is the capital city of Australia?
7. "Cold Chisel" is (a) a fairly boring metal-working tool, or (b) a bloody awesome Aussie rock band?
8. Complete this sentence: "We're happy liltle vegemites, as .... .... .... .... ....!"
9. If you're in a crowd and someone yells "Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!", what is the CORRECT response?
10. Do Australians actually drink Foster's Lager, or is that just a joke we're playing on foreigners?
And that's it. Get to it

The third ones easy but the first and second one, not so much.

Re: Aussie Pride!
Hehe, nobody said it was going to be easy. Entertaining for me, sure. Easy? Heh!
Re: Aussie Pride!
do we have to complete all 3 parts?
Re: Aussie Pride!
all i could possibly do is the test, but yes from what i read i think all three are required
The reason i suspect this is because in the course of my reading gob's post i found this message "What do you have to do? Well, there are three parts to this. You must do them ALL. Really."

Re: Aussie Pride!
I've decided to be nice on this one. You don't HAVE to do all the parts, but you'll definitely get extra points for it if you do.
You MUST, however do the trivia quiz and EITHER the photo OR the song. Extra points for doing both.

Land down under by the village people is MINE! I claim by right of conquest, and the monstrosity that comes from my attempt will possibly kill us all.

Re: Aussie Pride!
Done. Apologies to music lovers.
Re: Aussie Pride!
Ok, genghizcohen that does mean the song 'Down Under' by Men at Work is still free to claim, then?
Not that I'm claiming it, the Geneva Conventions have a paragraph which strictly forbids me to sing anything in public. And for good reason too.

Down Under by The Village People? Damn, genghiz, that'd be like me suggesting "Born in the USA" by Culture Club.
So... any entries on the way?

Re: Aussie Pride!
I could probably enter this with no work at all, if only I could find a picture from the crocodile hunter spoof i did on my talk show in college...but I don't think that any pictures of that exist anymore, so it would take work. And I haven't decided yet whether to work for it.

Hey. I was wondering if I can replace the photo with a "specially filmed" video? I have the equipment.

I just like the song. I don't know why. It's fun to listen to you. And, y'know, kind of embarassing at the same time.

Aussie Pride isn't about 'embarrassment'

Re: Aussie Pride!
Yay, got my first entry by email from Stroby, who has correctly answered the trivia questions... well, mostly correctly, a couple of his answers weren't exactly what I was after but his explanations will do. He has also posted both a song AND a pic. So far so good.
Here's the pic:
Can you do better?

Re: Aussie Pride!
Since quite a bit of work is involved in this, and we've only got ONE entry so far, I've decided to extend the deadline until intermission on the 15th (Sunday night AU, early Sunday morning US). That gives you all day Saturday.
Come on people, I don't want to have to give ALL the prize to Stroby. I mean, he's a good guy but still.

I'm still trying to find the best time to dress up. It's a very time appropriate costume, really...

Re: Aussie Pride!
I'm waiting for a chance to film my video and finish my props
Re: Aussie Pride!
Thanks for the contest extension, Gobb. I really want to participate in this one but have found myself with little time. Perhaps having Saturday will allow me to compete.
Re: Aussie Pride!
Ditto to what Grok just said. Also, I'm having issues with the costume. I might have to simply do something drastic xD

Re: Aussie Pride!
lol come on guys, mine can't win I did it the second I saw this thread which was about midnight and I did it with out moving from PC and I really should have found a recording for 'tie my kangaroo down, sport' before making my own version but it's not the stroby way.
Re: Aussie Pride!
I am making the props as we speak for mine.
Re: Aussie Pride!
Afraid I'm going to have to bow out on this one.
Between sick children and other stuff going on irl, I just don't have the spare time to do it justice.

Re: Aussie Pride!
There's been a lot of noise from people who are saying they want to take part, but with just 9 hours to go, there's still only one entry. Since the person who sent the entry is off skiing at the moment (hope you're enjoying it Strobes), I've decided to extend the deadline for entries by a week, to give everyone time to follow up on their grand plans.
This is the last extension though, so please get your entries in by Intermission on Feb 22, 2009.

And I just finished making the additions to my costume. -laughs-

Re: Aussie Pride!
OK, I have photographic (sort-of) entries from three more people who've correctly answered the questions. Here they are:
Elusis
I'm not *entirely* sure Elusis knows what a photograph is, but OK, it's kinda cute and I'll allow it:
Right2Wrong2000
I'm not *entirely* sure R2 knows what an Aussie is. I still say he needs a haircut though.
Impalix
Impy tells me she tamed her entry down a little... Is anyone else asking why?
Good job everyone! There's still 10 hours to go, so if you plan to enter, now's the time

McFeisty
McFeisty's got a temporary tatoo... at least, I hope it's temporary - a permanent one would have to be worth more than a sticker.
